Just out of curiosity, how do you guys think of education?

I think that until college, you get quite bad teachers (I went to college as a taster recently

) compared to the teachers at college.
In my experiences, the majority of my teachers have been bad, nasty or both.
(My English teacher marked me, and the majority of the pupuils for a level 3 when I got level 7(Max marks) on a recent test).

In my 6th form I have like 8 amazing teachers and a few well..... not so good ones. There not bad just old and they still teach like its 1952.

I've never had any problems on marking and thats probably quite serious especially 4 levels, I can understand 1 level to like trick you to try harder as alot of schools do that but 4?????

Also my exam timetable for my finals is lame, 4 exams in one day.... =(.

Some high school teachers are better than college teachers and vice versa. Choose your teachers if you can.

I went to public schools my whole life. My best teachers where in elementary school here in America. From junior high to high school my teachers were RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing morons. But hey I live in New York so yea. Least I learned about computers and electronics after graduating high school.

Isn't that where some sexy teacher named Debby Lafae or something like that teaches young men this and that about human anatomy? If it is I know a lot of people will say "Sign me up for some of that."

Or is it as the fascists think as the job of the state to make children as least like their parents as possible? As one well-known fasict put it "You mean nothing to me. We already have your children and once you are gone, they will be like us and we will survive."

Or is it like John Stossel put it in his book, a complex system to keep even the worst teachers employeed and even the simplified version of the firing process takes 3 pages to flow chart?

Or is it something were people feel the need to get the courts involved because some politician judge knows a lot more about education than parents and teachers.

To be honest, it's hard to answer education without knowning the exact role it needs to fill. In the US, it's nothing less than a nightmarish beast and it isn't surprised that we've now got a 50% drop out rate in some places. Or at least CNN reports it as such.

education =/= learning
At least in Texas where TEA yearly spews stupid into the school system.
Because of poor planning, pretty much all of Texas is going to epic fail the more difficult AP exams. My Physics C teacher described the learning we'd have to do to finish in time as drinking from a fire hose, and thats what its feeling like

Actually college teachers are bad and high school and below are good. See college professors don't teach you, they talk at you and then leave you to learn it on your own. High school and other teachers teach you the information. College is harder because many of the teachers, were not orginally teachers, they are retired people from the field they are teaching. Which is why they are bad teachers.

Education is pointless when you are working towards a standard fixed by some random politician. It is even worse when what you are being taught is either useless or outdated.

Kids are not being educated nowadays, they are being told how to think, what to think and to what standard to think it at.

Oh and with regards to teachers.... well some are better than others and some methods are better than others. As you get older, teaching usually moves on from spoon feeding to a teach yourself method. It really depends on the person to which you think is better.

Tyla's location says Manchester, England though. America's system is very different.

At a college in the UK, you *will* get taught there and the standard is generally better than that of public schools, as the staff are *usually* experts in their field.

As poobert said, a lot of information being taught in schools these days is outdated or just plain wrong. Take the false tongue map for example, it's been proven to be wrong, but is still printed in almost every school textbook.

My Physics teacher studied Chemistry, my Chemistry teacher is a downright pessimist and my Maths teacher treats everyone like morons.
The newest minister of education studied Commercial Economics and has no experience with teaching whatsoever.
The School Inspection focuses more on the time the students have been in school than the quality of the education.

So
A) Most teachers are not qualified (Either by field of study or character)
B) The Ministry employs morons.
C) No focus on quality

And I'm just talking about the Elementary to High School period. There are no strict regulations for Universities and Colleges.

If/When I'm put in charge of this country... >_>

What it was: the door to knowledge and great opportunities (getting from a working class to a better class?), the means for me to understand. Some teachers were mean, others were inspiring.

What it is: Part of my job. It can be very depressing at times (in particular when students failing to understand blame it on you), and a source of great joy (I will alays remember this 2nd year student who had trouble using computers and I helped her in succeeding in a computer project).

I go to high school in New Jersey. For me, all my teachers have at least a masters, though some in my school only have a bachelors degree. Most of my teachers in my school have a masters degree and a few have their PhD, a few in multiple fields. But degree= shit. Some of my teachers are just retired workers who can't get another job, thus having no knowledge in how to teach.

Now how do i feel about education? Well education is great, it gives you a great start in life. But the main problem i see in education is that kids don't push as hard as they should. I go to a selective school where I can see a lot of the future leaders of the world and geniuses who do multivaribale calculus like its nothing. But even they don't push as hard as they should. Most of them procrastinate as much as they can and try to do as little work as possible. Of course this is not a reflection of everyone, but some of the smartest people are so lazy.

My solution? Well ive always felt that teachers should at least try and inspire students to do better. We should raise the pension of teachers, but likewise expect them to obtain higher degrees and understand more about educating children and about their subject area. So many teachers just sit there and wait to get paid, not caring a bit about their students' grades, teaching liek crap. At least if they are forced to take courses in college and achieve higher degrees, they might have to work. But it also needs to be a job that pays better and is more desirable to be. At the same time, administrator jobs need to be lowered in school. Do we really need all these secretaries and guidance counselors? We need more teachers and thats that....

Also grading systems, this refers to only people in the U.S., should be highered so that passing is an 80. A bit harsh? Yes i admit it is, but in order for students to be forced to do better, they need to push even harder to do better. My passing grade in my school is 78, so i know its possible for everyone to do it.

EDIT: its like 2 a.m. in the morning o_o if its really bad writing i absolutely apologize, i am a good writer...at 12P.M. lol

My big warning is don't expect a degree to put you on easy street - a huge fraction of the graduate population struggle to get by and even pay their loans back. Talk to as many people as you can who are in the working world before investing your time and energy in college. Don't just listen to the hype that you will earn x amount for y degree. Talk to people who dropped out of college and talk to people who weren't successful to get perspective. And have backup plans for when you fail. Going back to your mother's place is not a great backup plan.
